Remembering Dynasty

It all began on January 12, 1981, with a three-hour TV movie on ABC and introduced us to oil tycoon Blake Carrington portrayed by John Forsythe and his lovely former secretary whom he was planning on marrying Krystle played by Linda Evans.  The show had us cheering and booing the characters. The one thing that saved my mother and me from arguments was that we were of like minds. Krystle was worth cheering for but Blake’s ex-wife Alexis was worth giving a bash on the head with a frying pan just to bring her to her senses.

For fans of Dynasty, the love affair went on for a total of eight years. During these years we lived with the Carringtons, a rich Denver, Colorado oil can, and another wealthy family, the Colbys who would enter their universe. It was exciting to see how the two families plotted and schemed against each other. To spice things up it was in the second season that we got to see British actress Joan Collins enter as Blake Carrington’s ex-wife to the displeasure of Krystle, who of course was nice enough not to say anything. She, however, learned to grow claws and had certain catfights with Alexis.

Dynasty seemed to have everything to grab TV viewers’ attention. However when they mixed in terrorism in the fourth season and showed all of the Carrington family at a wedding in the fictional country of Moldavia succumbing to a terrorist attack their ratings began to drop. This was in 1985 and I guess people just weren’t ready to accept such acts of terrorism. By their final season, 1988 – 1989 their ratings had dropped way down and unfortunately for diehard fans many plot lines remained unsolved. Fans got what they wanted when two years late a two-part TV movie Dynasty: The Reunion aired in 1991. I still have this taped on a video but I will tell you it did not meet with my expectations.
