Red Sky Warning be wary of Free wifi!!!!

Intelligence is the reality of technology. What I find interesting right now is the growing reality of what is binge de computing. Edge is just what it means. Companies, schools, governments, and organizations all have a network. That network has a core (base) and users. The users can be at the core. Or they can beat a Starbucks drinking coffee and using company resources. That, the user at the Starbucks is not the edge. The future of what is being called edge computing is reducing the distance between the user and the solution. Let’s talk for a moment about why companies are trying to push their edge further and further away from the core, first. That represents the first “change.”

It is pushing solutions to the edge of the network. Why would we do that? Well first off it allows you to have control. I am not a proponent of security through obscurity; it can be easily tricked. But there is a value proposition to reduce the exposure of time. The longer someone is connected, the more likely their connection can be compromised if they are in a physically secure location. The reality of physical security is it is much harder to trick multiple security guards than it is to hack the Starbucks wifi password. It is so much easier to hack Starbucks. Luis, you do not have to hack Starbucks to catch people. I cannot tell you how many times I have walked through malls and seen 8 or 9 free wifi.

The fastest way to hack a computer is to get it on a wifi network that you control. Everything that moves in and out of that Laptop, cell phone, or tablet is captured by your router. Free wifi can cost you your identity if you are not careful.

**note when using free wifi check, it should always be trusted by verifying situation**

The worst thing that can happen to you lies on the free wifi network if you don’t check it.

Lots of places do have a fish free wifi. Just be wary of free. You get what you pay for!More to come…

  1. Generally I don’t need to use free wifi. However, I have seen some people use their computers in Onehunga because they get free wifi and probably they cant afford internet at home.

  2. I used Wifi for free overseas in 2 hotels, but then I did pay to stay at the hotel…So in a way it was not really free.
If I go away in NZ and stay in accomodation, I may get so called free wifi but then it is not really free.

  3. let us assume for the sake of argument that starbucks is trustworthy and not going to capture your passwords, etc. you are still on this unsecured network with all these other systems and devices, any of which could be infected…
