The picture today is of snow. Well, snow, a house, and a driveway. You will notice that one path was made along one side of the driveway. Back when we were first starting as a family, I shoveled the driveway by hand. It had to be done so that my wife could get out in case of shopping or other issues. The reality of that process is it took me 45 minutes or more to clear the driveway. The house you see is our last house in Cincinnati, Ohio. Let’s talk about technology and the impact it has on houses. The house you see was wired. Every single room had a Coax connection, plus an ethernet connection, all of them terminating in the spare room in the basement.
Having a wired house is still something of value today, but less so now than it was when we did it in Cincinnati, Ohio, now more than 20 years ago. Still, if you have ethernet in your house, it allows you to separate the traffic. Manage as it was how applications flow in your house. That allows you to also move the top talkers in your house to another network.
What is a top talker? A top talker is a person in your house that does one of the following:
- Streaming media
- A game playing, either PC or console
- Moving large files from the internet or two the internet
Another thing you can do is change the networks in your house. You can go to Amazon or other online retailers and buy a Wifi hub. What this allows you to do is connect your new Wifi router and create a new wireless network. You most likely have a router from your cable company, that includes four internet ports on the back of it, and broadcasts a WIFI network in your house. With a new router, you can now have two Wifi networks in your house. You have the top talkers connect to one, and the rest of you use the others. If you need performance, run an ethernet wire to the back of your router, and now you have three distinct networks in your house.
That allows you to move traffic around in your home, giving everyone the bandwidth they need!

I have internet and wifi and that is enough for me …. the rest I don’t even understand …. P.S. but you dumped a lot of snow haha
if you had multiple people and many devices you would possibly need to break your network up.
think of it as a soccer field. Wifi is one goal, ethernet is the other goal, the rest of the field is broken up into halves. if you are practicing goal shots you only need 1 ethernet or wifi connection.
if you have a big team, you may have multiple goals, so that more people can practice!
Thank you so much for the kind explanation, dear friend
Happy to help pal!we each give to the world what we have!
I have wifi. But I don’t know how many doors I have.
you probably only have one or two people using the wifi i doubt you have bandwidth issues!
Same as Carol. As long as there’s internet, I am happy, lol.
you probably don’t have bandwidth hogs in your home
Not really sure about wifi, I know we have it but that’s about it.
Nice house! Too much snow. 🙂
i wonder if we moved to avoid the snow! it snowed at least 40 inches in Cincinnati back then!
On the wifi device (router) I have 5 ports on the back. The weather here is great for the beach. I have wifi at home and with my lady where I work.
you also probably don’t have a bunch of wifi consumers, unless your children are visiting!
I am not sure we have 4 ports at the back .. however, with my husband uses his office connection, only I use the wifi at home. When the boys are here, they mostly use their phone data sometimes the wifi. But I guess it could be useful if all at home are working with heavy files and data.
you are so right! right now, my wife works at home on occasion. Based on that she needs protected network connections so I built a system to help!
That is wonderful, but how do you do that?
she is on her own network segment that only her computer (work) can be on. It is set to her MAC address (that is an assigned number for the network connection of a computer)!
