Poll: City, Suburbs or Rural

People don’t always live where they’d prefer to live. There can be many reasons for this, but the focus here is on where you would live if you could. There are advantages and disadvantages to all three.

Cities offer convenience. It is usually not a long drive to find just about anything that you are looking for. The larger the city, the truer this tends to be. There is almost always something going on, regardless of the time of day. On the other hand, in the city, there are usually lots of people and normally a great deal of noise. The crime rate also tends to be higher and the air is often filled with pollutants like automobile exhausts.

Suburbs are still convenient, but you usually have to travel farther to find things that you are looking for. There is still plenty of ‘nightlife’, although you might need to travel a little farther to get to it. The number of people is less than in the city and as a rule, there isn’t as much noise. Depending on the neighborhood, there can still be quite a bit of crime, but the air pollution is normally less than in a city.

Rural areas are those where you need to travel to get almost anything you are after. If you need help, that help can take a half hour or longer to reach you. There is virtually no nightlife. A rural setting can be quite inconvenient at times. On the other hand, you rarely have neighbors who are really close by. The crime rate is minimal. There are fewer people, often more wildlife, and this setting tends to be far quieter than in either cities or suburbs. The air also tends to be fresher, though there is often more pollen and the air can be affected by the smoke from forest fires. Rural living includes places that are sometimes described as being ‘in the middle of nowhere’.

Given the choice, remembering that we aren’t talking about where you currently live but rather where you’d like to live, which would you prefer living in; the city, the suburbs, or a rural setting?

    • I have never lived in a city and have never had the desire to. I’m a country boy, through and through. I actually live in town right now and would prefer to live farther out, but this is a town of under 1,000 and that counts the whole valley.
