Out of the Darkness Memorial Walk

A few years ago I participated in an annual Out of the Darkness Memorial Walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

This was of course in memory of my son Dustin. We would get donations from many sponsors and the money would go towards the work of preventing suicide.

I have not walked with this organization in awhile but still keep in touch. It is a good cause for sure. The problem being they believe all suicides can be prevented. This is just not what I believe. Many can be prevented, but not all. If that were the case, my son would still be here.

But it is good to make others aware and know there is help if you or someone needs it.

  1. Human beings are complicated. It is mystery as to how some people can tolerate and grow through adverse conditions, but some give up for lesser hardships.

  2. This is a good cause, many people commit suicide in New Zealand. We have one of the highest rates of suicide in the world.
Im not sure what causes it there are complex reasons…but I think many have thought about it .

I would like people to become more compassionate to others but then some cant be compassionate and even if you bend over backwards. You don’t own people..It is sad

  3. If I told you I was moved by the fact that you are open and sharing about this issue? that you are helping others by sharing?

I’ve said that before but it is true.

That is an organization we give money to every year. There are many intersections with what my wife does for a living here.

    • Many more should talk openly about this epidemic. Most do not want to believe it could happen to their family. I was once one of those. “Not my child” mentality. Who wants to believe this anyway.

But it happened and I try my best to help others as much as possible to prevent them from going through the nightmare.

That is great to hear Doc. Glad you are doing your part to help others. It would surprise many, probably not you and your wife, at the numbers of suicide in the elderly. So very sad.

  4. I hear it for the first time. And I also don’t believe we can prevent all suicides. Life is very complicated and many lose the will to live like this.
