Ordinary Things

I was reading online different articles about writers who got stuck due to writer’s block and those who provided suggestions to get ideas about what to write. It then occurred to me that if you have a digital camera or a camera in your smartphone that you have a wealth of information right at your fingertips.

Let me explain better. Take a look around your house. Perhaps there are objects which you see and they bring back certain memories. If you take a photo of one of these objects and write about it and the memory you have a post ready to publish.

I took photos of several things and this particular post has to do with grasses or bentgrasses in English that grow along roadways. In Latvia, the grasses I am referring to are known as smilgas. They can be found along the roadways and in fields in June and July. If you bring a bunch home and let them dry they will keep for a lifetime.

When my hubby and I first met here in Latvia we were driving along a roadway in the country when he stopped along the side. There in a field there were many of these smilgas and he went and picked a bunch for me. I knew that he loved these smilgas as a symbol of his homeland. Giving me these smilgas as a token of his love meant so much more to me than if he had picked me a whole field of wildflowers or even gone into a store and bought me flowers.

Picking these smilgas came straight from his heart. They were in a small vase on a shelf since that time. In the photo you can see them and they bring back fond memories from such a long time ago. So you see all I needed to do was take a photo of them and tell you this story that stays in my memory.
