  1. My first orchid grew out of some potting soil that I rescued from the dumpster when I was throwing trash away one day. It was an unusual variety that I didn’t even know was an orchid, but since there were green leaves on it, after pulling it out of the soil I put it in a bucket of water and left it all summer. When I got back in the fall it had a stem with a bump on it and so I gave it fresh water and some plant food and forgot about it. When it bloomed I was amazed and went online to learn as much as possible about it.
