Once more into the breach!
AR and VR definitions:
AR or Augmented Reality means that over an image of what is real, additional information is added. The “reality” of Reality isn’t changed. You simply add or augment the view you see. This could be as simple as the ARRIM product, allowing you to lay a laser measure tool in an existing image or as complex as the game Pokemon Go. You can use a QR or image code to store and share the additional information. The thing to remember about AR is that your view, of the real object, doesn’t change. For example, I’ve talked many times about the wonderful company AstroReality. The cover picture shared today is of their Earth Product. Using AR, you point at the globe with your phone (running their application). You see Earth, well a model of earth. We could argue the extensional reality that would allow the earth to be contained by my office. But that is another argument for another day. Today, we are looking at a physical model of planet earth.
With AR and the application, we get additional information. What is AR how that information is presented and stored? In using the Astroreality application, you never stop seeing the Physical globe in the picture. You remain connected with the “real world” but are now provide additional information that augments your knowledge. AR. Another example of AR is the reality of HUD. What is HUD? Well if you live in the US, it has two distinct meanings. The first is the Housing and Urban Development Government Agency. We are not speaking of that HUD. The HUD we are speaking of is the Heads Up Display or HUD. Placed in front of the driver of a car, it allows you to see through it. But it can also, the HUD, provide you with more information about the car, trip and the world around you. It augments what you see with additional information. That is AR.
I think Schools, Museums, and Cities will be the first to implement AR systems. Why, well it is a critical part of education to show more. They have AR tags that allow students to learn when they are ready will improve education. The adage when the student is ready, the teacher will appear, truly is well implemented with AR systems.
Museums can have interactive displays or informational displays that may cost money to produce initially but over the life of the exhibit, save them considerable money.
Cities can build information kiosks that allow citizens to figure out where they are, what they are looking at, and where to get lunch where they are!!
When you look out your window, that is a reality, when you use your phone to identify the flower in your neighbor’s yard from a picture that is using AR and getting and delivering information about the world around you. AR starts with real. Stays with real and adds additional information to the real.

Yes DocAndersen. You should explain the VR too. I thought VR and AR were two different names for the same thing.
i posted VR today. 🙂 They are very different, and thanks for the encouragement!
Will check it right away. Thanks DocAndersen. Would you mind if I address you Doc as in Doctor?
Doc is a nickname, not a degree. But you are welcome to call me Doc!
What I don’t understand is AR tagging- where does the source live? If I tag something, do I have to host the data? If so, can it be mirrored or…?
As always you get to the meat of the technical problem.
1. the best use of AR would be to have a remotely hosted data source (that way it is always fresh)
2. You can embed data into the qr code, but you and i both know today that is 3k or less.
So the answer is both, but the first option is best.
Since it is simply hosted data, you can mirror, replicate or use whatever COOP model your organization finds critical.
my other question would be are all AR devices able to see the same content, or are there still dueling incompatible formats?
for the most part, most AR content is specific to the reader, but the readers tend towards application (AstroReality is the only app that reads their tags). Still a somewhat splintered market to answer your question.
this is to be expected with immature technology. until there is an industry wide set of standards (which is one of my baselines for determining maturity)
The mass market is usually the forcing function in Technology. With the 2nd and 3rd generation readers released and the new QR standards more and more compatibility is there.
The beauty of the splintered market today is more, that they can flavor the unique content they offer. I always wonder if that will be lost in the future…
one would expect demand to continue to drive the market, so functionality will continue to extend and evolve as long as there is profit in doing so
Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand a little more, but I will need some more time. The development of all the technology is sometimes a bit too quick for me ?
It becomes an interesting problem. If, it has no value to you now, it takes longer to learn! As this reality matures, you may find it really isn’t that hard to pick up.
People who know the technology the most as you really have to be a source of information here, Doc. Become a reference. That does not apply to me or others who are slower to follow the speed of technology. Your brand is strong here.
Thank you, Albert, your encouragement really helps as always!
Many more explanations will be needed for all ages of course. And technology is moving so quickly it is hard to keep up.
you are most as they definitely right, Carol! There is much to consider and many changes yet to come!
Thank you very much for the effort and precise explanation of what AR is, dear friend ….I hope that now I know what AR is and that I will also remember … I will read it many times
I have been thinking about this trying to come up with an easier way to explain AR.
I could be a professor how you can explain a thing … detailed and clearly … thank you again, dear friend
thank you! you are always there with nice things to say!
With great pleasure…..
If it is embedded to learn in schools it will be a good endeavor. There will be young people not familiar with new technologies. With this explanation, with examples of me, things are more apparent on the question of what AR is.
thank you!! that was the goal! I do agree the future of AR for schools is huge!
