Naysayer

The word was coined in the 1630s. I use it a lot and I like the word. I don’t believe that I have ever used it here. The word is naysayer. Often times in our meetings at work the moderator will say, we need a naysayer.  By definition a naysayer is someone who says something is not possible, is not good, or will fail. Some of you may be thinking right now, why on earth would you want that kind of person in your organization and meetings?

Ideas have to be challenged. The possibilities need to be examined in order to make sound decisions. There has to be a discussion that points out the negative and harmful consequences of a decision.

Part of thinking outside of the box is pointing out as many of the logical, possible outcomes. Perhaps everyone could benefit from at least one naysayer in their group of close allies.  A naysayer and use proper etiquette, and true facts to bring more clarity to the discussion.
