This picture was taken during my short vacation on the Croatian coast. Croatia is a land of thousands of islands, to be exact 1,244, and is a paradise for boaters. There are 47 inhabited and 652 uninhabited islands located at 1,777 km of the Adriatic coast. Each island is slightly different from the other, each has its own story and destiny. The first visit to islands is a journey into the unknown. Each subsequent journey, however, will return to the already known beauty of a different but equally fascinating land. When I look at these islands I often ask myself how did these islands come to be? Some islands are near the mainland and some are in the middle of the sea. I suppose I won’t get the right answer, but it’s still an interesting question and thinking about it. In nature, we see a new “miracle” at every turn.

Never been to an island, this is gorgeous!
Visiting the island is a truly special experience.
I assume every island forms using almost the same principle.
Thank you, Grace. I have to browse the web a little.
The formation of the Adriatic islands is no big secret. Earth movements caused by the African plate moving against Europe caused a series of parallel ridges to form. When the Mediterranean Sea and its arms including the Adriatic were formed, the lower parts of these ridges were drowned, which is why you now have parallel lines of islands fringing the eastern side of the Adriatic.
Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. Unfortunately, I don’t have that much knowledge ?
