Once you get past your internet connection, you’ve arrived in the Cloud. Many years ago, we used to document customer networks and include a cloud as the image of what lay beyond their network. It represents what isn’t inside of a company except for the concept of what is a private cloud. Let me start then if I may describing what the definitions of cloud computing solutions are.
- Personal Cloud: This is where you have shared storage or shared resources in your house. This can be as simple as a satellite or cable receiver. Or as complex and local Network Attached Storage solutions.
- Private Cloud: This is a cloud that is built wholly within the data center of a company or government entity.
- Managed Private Cloud: This is an offering by a company to another entity, is it also sometimes called co-location
- Community Cloud: A grouping of companies or entities with a common interest. All of the Cities in a country, banding together to offer shared citizen services is the example of a multi-tenant community cloud.
- Public Cloud: This is a multi-tenant solution that may be focused (a government only cloud) or opens (the public cloud). In each case, the customer creates what is called a virtual private cloud within the public cloud. They operate in their VPC.
- Hybrid Cloud: The combination of on-premise solutions (private cloud or traditional data centers) and any of the other three cloud solutions (Managed, Community or Public).
Office 365 and GSuite are examples of public cloud offerings. They, live in the special world know as SaaS, or Software as a Service. The clouds above are traditionally called IaaS, or Infrastructure as a service. The last component of cloud computing is the concept of PaaS or platform as a serv vice. This is where organizations can create development platforms, or use development platforms in the cloud. Salesforce.com is a great example (Force.com) of an available PaaS solution (Salesforce itself is a SaaS offering).
IaaS: Infrastructure as a Service
SaaS: software as a service
PaaS: Platform as a Service
DaaS: Desktop as a Service
Security is critical if you move your computer solutions out of your data center. The value of a data center is you always have the nuclear option when your company is being attacked by a hacker. You can turn everything off. You can do that in the cloud as well, but it is a lot faster in your managed data center. What cloud computing has enabled is the new concept of the Internet of Everything (formerly called the Internet of Things). Cloud allows for distributed computing, and ultimately the reality of everything being connected!

I like how you explained these things about the different cloud offering particularly infrastructure, service, and platform.
Thank you for the kind words. Trying to show a little of the inner workings without swamping people!
I can use some things online but I am careful. I don’t know a lot about computers.
A little fear is a good thing! I always tell people to be aware of that. You are well ahead!
I do not use online banking … this is done for me by a woman
Fair enough, it is important that we each move forward a pace comfortable for us.
decades ago, there was this stupid commercial about online banking which also tried to promote MMX and it made me furious- I would scream “how does multimedia acceleration help you bank online?!?”
I wonder about tech companies sometimes. Microsoft is advertising AI right now in some interesting ways. IBM puts its AI system on Jeporady.
It makes me giggle honestly.
Microsoft got a black eye from Tay, but I maintain that they weren’t at fault…
A fault is always hard to determine. Its why people that do Root Cause analysis get paid the big bucks!
Microsoft didn’t write Tay to be racist, Twitter users taught Tay to be racist… Ergo, I fault the racists and not Microsoft
Very interesting information. I do not know the answer for Virily, but I use online banking.
🙂 Virily is a web “far” its at least two or more Web servers.
I spend a lot of time building online systems for groups.
I only answered the questions I understood!
The reality of computers is that they in fact are constantly changing!
I am assuming Virily would be considered an Infrastructure as a Service.
Probably not, they (Virily) are a web application. They may run on an IaaS provider like AWS or Microsoft Azure (or many others). But the environment itself lives on 2 or more web servers.
