One of the things that people always ask about when considering technology is the processor. Originally PC’s shipped with 8-bit processors. We moved to 32 bit. It isn’t just four times faster to go from 8 to 32 bit. It is eight times faster. (it is four times faster both ways). Gordon Moore, one of the creators of Intel Chips, famously postulated that processing speed was going to double every 18 months. For computers that slowed with the Intel i5 chip release. Now it is roughly three years between speed doubling. 64-bit processors have been available for servers, now for more than ten years. The vast majority of computers sold for the past three years for consumer and business PC are now 64 bit,
Faster processors don’t always mean your computer will be faster; however, the evolution of software and what people do with computers has changed the overall impact of speed. First, computers load as much of the application as they can into memory. The more memory you have, the more your computer will perform. An i5 chip with 8 gigabytes of RAM, may outperform an i7 chip with four gigabytes of RAM. Or, both may double in speed by simply adding a Solid State Drive or SSD. Computers, load the OS and applications into Memory. When there is less available memory that OS and application requires, they use what is called a swap file.
Swap files are where the computer needs more physical memory than it has. So, the computer turns part of the Hard Drive into a Swap file. The hard drive becomes a memory. But the important thing to remember here, is hard drives are slower than memory. Even an SSD drive that isn’t limited by a physical spindle and spinning disk is slower than onboard memory. Processor speed plus enough memory and an SSD drive produce a faster computer.
As we look at the evolution of personal computers, you can see that reality. But there are other things that impact your computer’s performance. The first is the type of applications you are using.

I think we are experiencing all three stages of the processor’s development, and enjoy the speed now.
You have completed my knowledge with an explanation of swap files.
thanks! the number one slower down of computers is often a slow hard drive.
I understand your technical explanation, Coach!
I am glad. People often struggle with accepting that they should reduce variables when troubleshooting!
Thanks DocAndersen for useful tips on speeding up the computer.
You are most welcome, thank you for the kind words!
we can’t miniaturize CPUs anymore with the existing tech, so clock speeds are going to plateau. and those speeds are far to slow for photonic architecture…
It is an interesting situation, that speed limit (light can’t go faster than 1860000 mph) 🙂
oops make that 186000
right, but even our fastest processors can’t handle instructions at C, even when they’re written in C++
Someday. but not today.
You are right, the reality of the speed of light is that a network can deliver more data now than a system can process. So you have to create systems of systems.
the stack can throttle back network traffic by itself, but it would be nice if the router/switch helped with that
but what’s a CPU to do with instruction sets and interrupt requests hitting it faster than it can react? crash, that’s what it will do
So the router can today, help with the routing and rerouting of the information. The reality of the overwhelmed processor, shouldn’t exist. It does, you are 100% right but it shouldn’t.
We have the ability to use AI/ML to develop and improve the reality of applications.
yeah, let them solve the photonic problem- they have the highest stake in it, after all…
There are some new models for applications that hopefully will begin the evolution to less reliance on any one device.
if we could ever crack quantum computing, photonic architecture would probably become a moot point anyway…
Quantum computers are interesting. Massively parallel, able to process some things faster than other computers.
But limited today. We are at the edge of the cusp of the information age!
quantum anything is spooky, but in a good way
Very interesting information, my computer is slow. The star is three years old (Intel i5) and for some time I’m thinking if I can do anything myself, it will be faster ?
I can tell you there are a number of things that can be done. Which version of windows are you running my friend?
I use the version of Windows 10
Then the tips I posted in my next post will help!!!
Thank you so much, Doc. I saw the post and I’ll try
if those don’t work let me know, there are other things we can try!
A lot of interesting information, my friend
Thanks as always for your kind words!
Thank you for you such comprehensive information
You are most welcome my friend. I hope this comment finds you well!
Yes I know having lots of windows open at one time can slow things down. My computer is not slow but this site surely is lately.
Carol, there are a lot of variables in your statement. I’ve noticed a much larger number of 503 errors with the site.
I have not noticed site slowness. But it wholly depends on the time of day you access any internet site as to if it is fast or slow.
The other side, since your computer is fast, is to verify you are getting the internet speeds from your internet provider. If you have DSL or Cable modem, uploads are capped on your router at your house, you may be experiencing that issue.
Good luck!
Hmm, Really Nice Post..
I Have Laptop Core I7 Six Gen
16 Gb Ram, 1Tb HDD I call this, My Gaming Laptop! 🙂
That is a really nice computer.
