As much as I always got presents from my parents for Christmas and their friends and my godparents it was difficult to know what to get my parents. Now a child of five or six usually begins to realize that parents also need presents but doesn’t have a lot of money. If I remember correctly I believe that I didn’t even get a regular allowance or pocket money yet. I usually was given some pennies or five cents for candy.
Remember these were the good old days of penny candies and such. So I had to rely on other sources. Dad would take me to buy a present for mom that was usually some cologne and mom would take me to buy a present for dad which was either a tie or aftershave.
After a while of course, if you counted in birthdays both mom and dad had an ample supply of what I called smelly water or in dad’s case ties. However, there was one aftershave scent I just couldn’t get enough of and luckily dad liked it too. That was Old Spice and I just loved that smell on dad. It still makes me think of him right away whenever I catch a whiff of that scent.

What fond memories of youth. We rarely bought gifts in our family.
Amazing how certain smells can take us back many years ago.
At one time I kept a bottle of Old Spice around just for the memories since I missed my dad so much, Carol.
Precious memories! Happy Birthday!
Thank you, Ellie. Just hanging around reminiscing.
I loved my dads cologne I think it was old spice as well.
We always have a big card and everybody in the family signs and makes wishes.
