Mammals of Glacier National Park

Early this morning we were making a list of the mammals we have seen in Glacier National Park. We looked at the list and I believe there were over 70. What we found most interesting was that the two most rare were ones that we had actually seen. When we lived close by we did spend a lot of time in the park.

The picture featured is a Fishers Cat. We were not really aware that they were seldom seen. We probably just saw the same one over and over.  I only saw a wolverine once, I was lucky enough to get plenty of pictures, so that was exciting.

We’ve seen many, many bears, mountain goats, mountain sheep, deer and elk.  The otters were delightful. The wolves are elusive, kind of like a flash of fur running through the trees.

  1. I was not sure what to put for the 2nd question because the bear cub I saw earlier this month could have been a grizzly but it may have been a brown bear instead. Sightings of grizzly bears have become rare in California in recent years, but there was one seen in Malibu recently. I wouldn’t know the difference. This was the first one I ever saw in the wild and probably will be the last.

  2. My wife and I were planning on going there a few years ago but had to cancel because her father passed away. Unfortunately it’s unlikely that our own health issues will allow it.

    • They have a lot of options to see things. My bother went right after surgery on a guided trip for people who are ill. There are so many options now.
