Making Your Weather Seem a Little Nicer

In many places, the weather is already turning cold and blustery. Here in Montana, it didn’t get above freezing yesterday (32 F / 0 C) and there is a light dusting of snow on the ground this morning under overcast skies.

This weather might sound a tad bleak and perhaps the weather in your location is similar. However, one way to make your weather seem a bit better is to consider the weather in another location.

Try this. It is the current weather for Admundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica. Keep in mind that this is late spring in Antarctica and today in Admundsen-Scott South Pole Station, it is a very nice day…for them.

Indeed, they have bright, sunny skies and there is very light east by northeast winds of only 18 mph. The current temperature is a balmy -27 F / -33 C. The windchill isn’t bad, either. It is -59 F / -50.5 C.

Now, doesn’t that sound like nice ‘shorts and tank top’ weather? Believe it or not, sunburn is a very real danger for any exposed flesh in this place. The ever-present snow reflects and intensifies the sun’s rays.

    • I suppose that it depends on the severity, but it definitely hurts. A lot of folks get a surprise when they go out skiing or such on a cold, overcast day and come home to find out that they are sunburned.

    • One of the worst sunburns I’ve ever had was one I got during a snowstorm when I was 10. I played outside in it all day and it was the one day I also forgot my goggles. My face and my eyes were sunburned and for several hours, I had snow blindness. It was quite uncomfortable and frightening.

  1. The weather here in Lake Charles is the high 50s. I am thankful for that. I realize that some people go through weather conditions and they have to tough it out.

    • I know a large number of people who feel that way, Mary. The funny thing is that people really do get used to it. That is different than learning to like it. LOL One of our pastors and his wife moved to Montana from Arizona. The wife thought she’d hate the tremendous cold we get during most winters, but it turns out that it is mostly the snow and ice that bothers her the most, mostly because it is difficult to walk on at times.
