Three M’s today. Magnolia shared with today’s Macro Monday challenge.
This photo is of one of my magnolia tree blooms. It was taken a few weeks ago. All of the blooms are gone now, only the green shiny leaves remain through the fall and winter.
This tree is one of my favorites. Even without the blooms, the leaves are always pretty.
Some Magnolia tree trivia you m ay not know:
- Magnolias are believed to be the earliest known flowering plants, with their fossils dating back over 100 million years. Magnolia trees even existed before bees, so they rely on beetles for pollination. Instead of nectar, the flowers produce large quantities of pollen that the beetles use for food.
- The oldest trees on the grounds of the White House are two southern magnolias planted between 1829 and 1837 by Andrew Jackson. They were planted in memory of his wife, Rachel, who died shortly after he won the election.
- Magnolia flowers are actually composed of “tepals,” a combination of sepals and petals similar in size and shape, comparable to water lilies.
Also, there are at least 15 varieties of Magnolia trees. Mine is called the Southern Magnolia. It has big saucer sized blooms and then eh shiny dark green leaves year round.

Many to choose from, love this tree and fragrant blooms.
We have a few varieties of magnolias here. They are different from the ones your picture shows except for a few. The golden lily magnolia is very popular here

We have a small tree with white magnolia that has a strong scent. Around here they also grow the yellow one.
Many have asked about the Magnolia before and I thought I would share. One of my favorite trees. The one we have will grow over 100 feet.
