This is the flower of the cannon ball tree. The tree gets its name from the huge cannon ball sized fruits which hang on its trunk and branches. Its botanical name is Couroupita guianensis.
The flowers are mildly scented and have a hood like projection that gives it local name snake hood flower. The flowers are velvety soft and shimmer in the sun. They are delicate and break easily even though they seem big and strong. In the flowering season they hang like huge bouquet of flowers on the tree trunks and it is a wonderful sight to see,
The leaves are oval wide, dark green and shiny. This huge tree grows up to 60 feet in height. I have not seen these tree grow in large numbers.

No , I don’t think so. Only the birds pick on them and its apparently got a unappetizing smell.

I have seen it in a few southern cities in India. I have no clue about its availability. As I said it is not one of these tree you see commonly. I used to see one in my university campus.
According to my search results this tree is available mostly in South India.
That is what I said too, but I have no clue if they are found in other parts of Asia which I think is a possibility.
Now I remember, it looks like this is the same flower and fruit as a friend here who lived in Thailand has shown.
