A friend of mine reached out the day before yesterday. He was trying to figure out which camera to get. We talked through the process I’ve used in the past, to pick a new camera. He said and I quote “why the heck haven’t you published that.” So without further adieu, my camera selection process.
- First, you have to figure out, BEFORE, you look at cameras how much you can spend. This is important!
- Consider the following:
- The type of pictures I take
- The number of pictures I take
- What I take pictures of
- For me this next one is critical – I need a rugged camera
- I like to be able to focus manually
- I prefer everything to be automatically focused
These five simple rules help you. First of all, with the recent cameras in cell phones, your cell phone can be your camera. It is, however, less convenient for people that are always on the phone. I can take a picture and talk on the phone at the same time with a camera. It can be done as well with my cellphone, but it becomes less convenient.
If you had asked me ten years ago, I would have pulled a camera out of my bag. Now, not always sometimes I don’t have a camera with me. Now there are many pictures I only capture with my cellphone. But that got me thinking, and I will add some poll questions to figure out if I am alone in this. I will also ask the question on Mylot.
- Are there situations where a camera functions better than a cell phone?
- Does holding your cellphone and capturing the image on the screen create more movement in the actual picture?
- I have a rugged camera because I can’t afford to drop my phone!
- While my iPhone has many cool video features, my Olympus and my Canon have much better quality video.

If you are a woman Doc, another consideration would be can your shoulder still carry additional weight by carrying a separate camera? ??? You cannot believe how heave our bag could be ?

um as a husband I carry my wife’s purse often. Plus the camera. 🙂
To get a husband just to have someone to carry my handbag seems to be a lot price to pay ??? especially since the woman has to do a lot more in return ahahahaha apology Doc ??
none taken, there are of course many benefits and values on both sides.
An expensive DSLR won’t grant instant skills, talent, knowledge and experience. I’d like to get into photography but I’m not rushing for a new camera. My old iPhone doesn’t seem to have manual settings or good quality (referring to resolution and zooming), but I think it’s enough for close-up shots. I think size might play an important role in my case… I have small hands! ?☺
That is very true, the advantage of a digital camera is you can take 1000’s of pictures and get the occasional good one!

i bought a very expensive digicam only to use my phone on the trip. Expensive because it was Canon powershot and super expensive when i bought it.
i suspect that is the overall direction of most people, moving more to the phone.
yes, it is convenient to use and now the resolution is getting better and better.
so much better than it was when I first got a cellphone with a camera!
I’m currently using only a mobile phone to shoot. A phone is more practical

I don’t take pictures. I enjoy the pictures of others and I rarely allow anyone to take my picture. I guess I am odd.
I guess i got the bug from my dad, it is something people like (taking pictures) or don’t really like (taking pictures).

Yes there are many questions to ask before purchasing a camera. I use my phone only when I am out and have no other, but it does pretty good.
There are, I am going to share more of the decision process I use. I can’t post tables on Virily so I have to pull my table apart.
I am in the same boat as you, if I am going somewhere I expect to take pictures I take my digital camera.
