Love ItLove It

Like Father Like Daughter

I don’t know how it works concerning fate or what have you but I am living proof that there are things that you might repeat and later discover that your parents did the same thing first or suffered the same injury. What am I talking about? Well, listen to my story it has two parts.

When my parents were upon the ship bringing them to New York City in 1951 from Europe my mother was dreadfully sick most of the journey with seasickness. Meanwhile, my dad was having the time of his life because there was plenty of good food to eat. Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last very long. My dad had a painful accident when he smashed a ship’s door onto the first finger of his left hand. There was no anesthetic on board the ship and so they had dad drink some vodka while they sewed up his finger.

Years later after my dad had already passed away my mom took me and my girlfriend to Europe with her to the Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Cologne, Germany. We stayed with her friends in Offenbach, Germany. Both of us were teens 16 years old. We were bored most of the time so we did all sorts of things to amuse ourselves. One of them was taking all sorts of silly pictures. In one picture I’m standing against a tree trunk with my leg lifted up. Back at home, I discovered a picture of my dad with his leg up against a tree. There is our first similarity and I placed these pics side by side in my album. Later I was able to combine them as you can see in the photo.

The second similarity involves my dad’s finger incident. At this time I was 17 and I got my finger smashed into an apartment metal door. Ouch is absolutely right. Now the similarity was that it was my middle finger on my left hand, therefore, the finger next to the one my dad smashed. I too had to have stitches but of course, the emergency room gave me enough anesthesia to float me away. Amazing how alike my dad and I were in these instances. That was why I always wished that I had had the chance to get to know my dad better as I grew older and missed him so much when he died.
