Let's try to be fair, here!

How do we apply the social rules of interaction to the world online? Do we, first of all, apply the same rules? Are there different rules for online versus in-person communication? Recently another Virily writer wrote about the reality of being told by other members and writers on Virily that they posted too much. First of all, it makes sad that someone would ever say that to another writer. What we write and how much we write is wholly a personal choice. Our story is our story and how and what we share is wholly our choice. My grandfather used always to tell me “clean your house first, then tell me my house is dirty.” To those who seek to control others, stop,

The rules of interaction online are horrible. What we accept in the online world isn’t good its bad.

  1. If you can’t say something nice then, don’t say anything — a rule that I was taught many years ago. I worry now that the internet version of that (next) has become bad.
    1. If you can’t say something nice, create a throwaway account and say it that way.
    2. If they don’t know who you are, you can say a thing.
  2. My father always said to me “if you climb to the top of a tower to shout this is wrong. Then when it is fixed, you have to climb to the top of the same towner and shout this works now!”
    1. I counted negative comments here on Virily versus positive things said about Virily. The ratio of negative comments to the admins versus positive was about six to one. If you take out two people that rate goes to about 10 to 1. Seriously?
    2. Reddit has a great rule, remember the human.

I am done with the negative. There are writers here on Virily that I treasure reading. I love reading about Carol’s Garden. I love reading Alberts’ posts on making the world a more open place. I love Kim[‘s posts about her walks, her dogs and her eggnog induced Chrismas Song quizzes. I love trying to get a full Norman. That is when you take one of Norman’s quizzes and get them all right! There are so many more writers that read on Virily, and I love your work!

Also, since I joined the site, there have been a couple of problems that aren’t problems any longer — one of the Viril cheating done by a large number of the writers on the site. That has been fixed. The stability of the site continues to improve!

Thank you to the writers mentioned and many more (Mavic, Ghostwriter, Branka and so many more). Your contributions to my life have been tears, joy, and smiles.

Time for the Virily Pledge “I understand as a writer on Virily (or any other site) that I am responsible for what I say. I promise to post both positive and negative comments. I will strive to be fair and get as close to equal as I can.”

  1. This is a topic that has very blur boundary… Many are trying to define how to use internet more responsibly but it seems difficult to set the rules. Actually, it’s pretty much same in real life, just with more constraints.

But of course, its never right to bully on the internet. I think there is a difference between criticism/opinions and attacking/bashing. But yet the line can be thin or even different for individual.

    • No one ever learns in a wholly negative environment (except one such environment, where it is your life that depends on the learning). It is time that we set the boundaries of the internet. If you choose to be anonymous that is fine, but your comments should still be attached to you. If you have to wear what you say, you may actually come back and be more positive from time to time!
