Just Like Yesterday

I received a phone call from a long forgotten friend last evening. I am not really certain how he even found me. It’s been years. I married and had a different last name. I rarely visit with anyone for the town in which I grew up. And still the call came in.

He asked if I remembered the day the jet crashed. “Yes,  just like it was yesterday. I can feel the heat from the crash and the burning. The smell is clear. This was literally seared in my brain.” He mentioned that he still has nightmares.

I don’t have nightmares often, and I don’t go to airshows. I typically stop by the memorial if I am in Dillon.

The ball of fire that came shooting down the street. The fact that all of my family was on the other side if the explosion. The street signs melted.  The sirens blared. The parade was on the other side. I had no way of knowing if thousands had been blown up with the fireball. My family had no way of knowing the same about me on other side of the event.

It will never be forgotten.

  1. Healed? I’m not even sure if you are sick.

I ever saw a big explosion when I was a child when the Marine armory warehouse exploded not far from where I was living at that time. Even hospital patients have been moved out and some are driven by gurney around my house.
