Jewel Cave National Monument South Dakota

Today I’d like to share a little bit of history of the cave.  The first bit of written history on this amazing cave was a mine claim filed by two brothers. They described the cave as a hole that was too small for human entry, with a blast of cold air coming out. It is unclear what they hoped to mine inside, it was clear they wanted to be noted as the ones who found the hole.

Everyone knows how to make a small hole bigger, they got together and used a little dynamite to see what was in the cave. They found low-ceiling rooms coated with beautiful calcite crystals and from that the name came. “Jewels” were hanging from the ceiling.

The Monument is closed for the season It opens late April.

It’s not a place where you can just drop in and visit the caves. You have to have an different pair of shoes that have never been worn in a cave and there are some other restrictions.

It’s an amazing experience if you go prepared.
