Started back on Alibb’s Alphabet Crazy challenge today. Sharing a couple of Japanese beetles on a rose of sharon bloom from my spring garden.
These beetles are not good for your flowers. They will eat the buds before they even bloom, as well as the leaves. I have a spray to use each year to try and avoid as many as possible.
They emerge from the soil as adult beetles and begin feeding the following June. They usually attack plants in groups, which is why damage is so severe. Although the lifecycle of the adult Japanese beetle is barely 40 days, it can cover a lot of ground.
Even if you succeed in controlling your Japanese beetle population, your neighbor’s Japanese beetles might come on over.
Amazing how cool they look with their iridescent brown and green colors. But don’t their good looks fool you. Get rid of them at once.

Nice photo and great capture I don’t know this beetle
This is the first time I see a Japanese beetle.
dad used to pay a penny a beetle. I once got two dollars in a single day!!!
The black beetles are not so bad but these green ones are devastating to your garden.
we had to have only green ones in the bag! Took me all day but I got 200.
My mom pulled me aside and said you just spent 5 hours for 2 dollars.
Mum teaches you about the ROI
more she was tweaking my dad, but yeah I learned about ROI!
No this is not in my garden …
You are lucky not to have this beetles.
We used to have it in our coconut berry tree when I was a kid. I haven’t seen this one lately.
We have these every summer in the garden.
You take the most amazing photos, I love every one.
You are so kind, thank you! 🙂
I love those little guys, but they’re aren’t as agile as they could be…
You can have all that I find. They destroy my garden. But they do look cool.
one of them ran into me once. it didn’t hurt but I felt it…
Wonder why they are called Japanese (lol)
They (scientific name: P. japonica ) are actually native to Japan before they started being seen in North America.
Great photo I have never seen this kind of beetle before
You would remember it as the green is almost like neon!
Fortunately, I have never noticed this bug in the garden.
You are lucky, they can destroy the garden.
Even with treatment there are so many I can never get them all.
I have seen beetles but can’t differentiate one from another.
These have a bright neon green that is hard to miss.
And these will destroy your garden.
I will mark them. I thought all beetles are harmless.
I thought so too until I found damage, especially to my rose of sharon bushes.
I think I’ve seen these bugs in my garden before, my friend … is it green in the back?
Yes, as I said, they have iridescent brown and green colors. Hard to miss the bright green.
I am not aware of this challenge. I like this beetle with the brilliance of its flower back.
Here is a link to her challenge. You can go at your own pace.

The problem is they will destroy your garden.
Great bug for the challenge lol.
I thought so, thanks!
I hope you don’t have them in your garden.
