It Sticks in My Craw

The title in this case is an idiom. Just in case someone isn’t familiar with this particular idiom “To  cause  one  to  feel  abiding  discontent  and  resentment.” I don’t understand Kamala Harris being very upset about the busing that she participated in as a child.  I come from a different perspective all together. Where I lived you rode the bus if you lived outside of town and you walked if you lived in town.

So I dug in and did some research on busing children to other schools. Like most big government projects the objective had good intent. The goal was that all children would be able to attend schools with funding, good teachers, and great opportunities, even if they had to take a long bus ride to get there.  It was designed to desegregate and become a more united nation.  In some cases children were even provided clothing so they could “fit in” to the new school they were being bused to.  I am not saying the program worked or didn’t work, because it would appear it was different for each student.

On the other hand Kamala gave inaccurate information along with her opinion. Should she correct? I don’t think it is necessary. I don’t know or care if it was intentional. All in all she is successful and educated so busing was not the traumatic event that some have described. Or even if it was, she has found a way to overcome and be successful and still holds a grudge. (That is not something I would run a campaign on.)

It was her story to tell, the facts just don’t match up.

  1. A good book to check out is called Why Busing Failed: Race, Media, and the National Resistance to School Desegregation (American Crossroads) by Matthew F. Delmont. The real problems in regards to disparity in education comes down to bad parenting teaching their children the wrong things and underpaying teachers so that the teachers no longer have the enthusiasm to teach children.

  2. I suspect the “impact” of her statement was the goal. At the moment, it did knock the top person (Biden) back a bit. So goal achieved.

I know, as I taught school for 7 years that the reality of our education system and its problems are much bigger than busing.
