INVASIVE MYNA'S

The common myna or Indian myna, sometimes spelled mynah, is a member of the family Sturnidae native to Asia. An omnivorous open woodland bird with a strong territorial instinct, the Myna has adapted extremely well to urban environments and appear unfazed by changing weather temperatures.

First arrived in South-Africa to control pests. With their arrival, these Common Indian Myna (Acridotheres tristis) in a region signals a disaster to come over local bird populations anywhere in the world. This is an extremely aggressive bird and chases out native birds and small tree-dwelling marsupials. It is not uncommon for them to attack humans when they feel threatened.
