the canary sings, its song
a gentle reminder
all is right
all is ok.
But in the sound lies
the danger
in the darkness of the coal mine.
That once, as we grab picks
and shovels, that once
the Canary won’t sing.
At the bottom of the coal mine
in the darkness
piecing us with
silent
silence
as the Carnary
takes a nap
and we run
to save our lives.
-
have you ever been afraid
-
Yes
-
No
-
Better the bird than you.
There is always the other side.
I understand you. I was in this too. It was difficult, but somehow I survived.
The story of your loss is a much deeper well than the one I climbed out of. You are a true survivor!
You described being afraid perfectly. Been there too many times.
ah – you got the message from my 27-year-old self -I wrote this poem as I was going through a divorce. I ended up better on the other side, my Canary lives, but there was a time when I didn’t know.
Oh wow, it makes complete sense now. That is how I took it. When I lost my son of course. I have been in that place.
I was hurting. In a really bad place. I did, like you make it to the other side though!
We are survivors! Thankfully we survived to help others perhaps.
without a doubt you have helped me!
Thank you!
You are very welcome, glad to know!
The canary fooled them all. Very good poem.
🙂 You are saying the Canary put a yellow cloth in the cage and never went into the mine? 🙂
The canary wasn’t dead; he was taking a nap.
ROFL
thank you so much you made me laugh outloud!
Anyway, the song is beautiful and it has its purpose, my friend
all things fit the cage they are in!
Nice post,thanks for sharing.
thank you for the kind words.
I never like poems that cut everything up into “mini–lines”. This would be so much better if the lines made more sense.
as a wise man once said
“I would change the show if you were the audience.”
The canary seems the harbinger of bad news. You have a way with poetry
Perhaps you are not aware of the old custom of coal miners to take a caged canary down into the mine with them. The canary will succumb more easily to poisonous gas than people will, so if the canary keels over you know that it is time to leave. In more recent times, miners were able to rely on scientific instruments to do this job for them.
you are right – a very scary thing when the Canary was silent.
You are right there but interpretation is left to the reader of poetry given the limited input
that is the joy and wonder of poetry – I loved your last one (school) for that very reason it means something different to everyone that reads it!!!!
Thanks – it was. When the Canary was silent, the miners had a very small amount of time to get out of the mine!
Very good post , thank you for sharing
thanks I am glad you enjoyed it
