How often do you change the dishwasher sponge?

The kitchen is an environment extremely conducive to all kinds of contamination by bacteria and viruses. If the stove, the sink, and the countertops are cleaned and the dishes are washed, it’s all right, right? No!

According to the American Center for Disease Control (CDC), sponges should be changed weekly. Also, they should be cleaned daily – put in boiling water for three to five minutes, or put in the microwave for two minutes, moist and wrapped in kitchen paper.

In the case of dishwashing cloths, the CDC warns that they should be disinfected and washed whenever wet (in a washing machine at 60 ° C) and changed daily.

I must confess that I wasn’t aware of this and usually I only changed my dishwasher sponge once a month :O

  1. I wash my dishes with a dishwasher without sponges, but in the past, I used to change it every two-three days. I think it accumulates microbes even after one day.
