How many USB cables is too many?

One of the things I’ve switched to recently is braided versus standard USB cables. I think I am harder on ables than other people. But the braided cables are stronger and don’t have the issues I often run into. The issues I have experienced with USB cables are fraying and separating (where the end pieces separate and no longer fit snugly.  I also find the number of USB cables you have to have to be annoying. The devices I use all the time require me to carry three different USB cables (Lightning, the Apple charging cable, SUB -C for my Samsung phone, and finally I have a micro USB cable to charge my headset. The reason I take them with me is the time frame I am gone.

Normally at least 10 hours. That is the amount of time I am gone. I have a connection/charger for my iPhone in the car. I also have a charger (USB-C) for my work phone. But the problem is I often park my car and go into a building. Based on that I have a couple of extended life batteries that allow me to charge my devices anywhere, but I need the cables! I have tried some of the multicables (smaller and have multiple charging types), but those don’t always work. I have tried some of the wireless charging options, but you still have to have that charger with you. The reason I am bringing this up today, beyond the fact that I haven’t complained about USB ables in a while, is simply a curiosity.

I realize as I try to clean up my office area, USB cables are one thing I have a lot of in my office. In part because I am always afraid to go down to only one cable of each of the three USB cables I use frequently. The other reason is I have multiple devices for each of the various cable types. I need more than one each cable to change everything quickly at home. On the go, I need one cable, I am willing to risk running out of power for a device when I am on the road. Because of this, I was talking to a friend of mine recently. He and his co-creator have embarked on a project to create a three or four in one USB charging cable that will be braided and will allow you to charge all devices equally from the single USB port. I will let you know if they decide to embark on this journey or not!

  1. Ok, I will have to admit. They are annoying, and yes they always come loose from the end thingy on it. You end up moving it left, right, up, down, Aha, theres that light…. finally. The charger in my car quit working. So now I use just the computer to charge. My son uses the plug in at the wall. My mom uses hers by her chair to charge hers. I do like the pretty colors they come in, is that what you asked? 😉

  3. We keep arguing about the number of cables lying around our home. Hubby keeps getting more of these because he forgets to put then in the car or in the office. :/

    • In his defense (since I do the same thing) its ok. But my wife says to clean up the office and get rid of the extra cables.

The reality is, I have way too many.

  4. I have many cables at home too. I throw some really unused ones, and keep those that we might still be using, and still there are a few hanging around in the home. I guess there are too many devices at home now.

    • I think we have many devices, I would love to see all the companies agree on either USB-C or the Lightning cables.
(no matter how you plug-in devices with those two cables it always charges. You don’t have to have the cable in only the one way).
