How do I make these “Semi-B&W” photos? A Half-baked tutorial.

tasartcraft asked me how do I make these photos that are some black and white only in some areas.

I think there are many ways to get this effect but I can only share the way which I usually do. It takes a little bit of time and patience but you’ll get the effect you want!

First off, you must get an image editing program that allows layers. So that you can work on spread layers of the same photo without affecting the other.

I’m working on Photoshop.

  • Question of

First off, you open the image in Photoshop and make a copy of the image. The image usually appear as a layer named “background”.

    • To make a copy of the layer, click on it and then press “Ctrl + J”.
  • Question of

Then you select the duplicated layer. (Which will be “Layer 1” by default) and then change it to black and white.

    • By the way “Desaturate” works also.
  • Question of

Just click “ok” when this popup. You usually do not need to adjust anything.

    • Ok.
  • Question of

After you get “Layer 1” change to B&W, select the eraser tool by the side.

    • Yes
    • No
  • Question of

Now erase away the parts that you want to be coloured, leaving only the parts you wanted as B&W!!

    • If you make a mistake, “Ctrl +Z” to undo your LAST step. “Ctrl + Z” can only undo 1 step!
    • So if you wish to undo more than 1 step, you need to use “Ctrl + Alt + Z” after that! But there is always a limit to how many steps you can undo!
  • Question of

    Is this helpful?

    • Yes
    • No
