With 5 girls and little money mother did a great job dressing us up. The ‘hand me downs’ rule was in great force and me being the youngest got the brunt of it all. Not that I did not get new dresses. I did but that was may be once a year.
I had accepted my fate and in fact kind of looked forward to specially when it came to particular dresses my sisters wore which I liked very much And when mother started repairing them to fit me I just could not wait.
This is history now I do not see anyone wearing hand me downs. The second generation is well off with their wardrobes packed to capacity with new clothes.

Did you wear hand me downs?

No

I was lucky with this because my sister is younger and smaller than me.
So your sister got the hand me downs (lol)
After a certain age, I got “hand me ups.”
My little sister got to be a bigger size than me, so I got her stuff. As for my kids, I was able to give all 5 new clothes when the old ones wore out.
The present generation is lucky That is interesting that you got ‘hand me ups’ (lol)
