Hail to the Snowblower and the Snow Shovel

I always thought that the snowblower came along much later but it actually was ready to use in the early 1950s. My parents always lived in apartments so I would not really know anything about snow cleaning until much later in life. It was a Canadian company that first introduced the snowblower and then in the 1960s came other companies with other models.

I remember when snowblowers started to also be used for leaves in the autumn because raking was so tedious. One weekend I was visiting a friend in Connecticut and we had to rake the leaves but the neighbor across the way had a blower she waved and came over to inform us that it was not hers. She must have thought we might ask to borrow it. As she was leaving I love what she said – isn’t it nice to have a friend with a blower? I still have not gotten that lovely phrase out of my mind.

Of course, there is also the good old snow shovel which has been around the longest. How long? Well believe it or not about 6,000 years. It still is a great help when a blizzard blows in and in the 1870s over 100 patents were granted for various snow shovel designs. While I lived in Latvia it was important for every house to have a snow shovel. Otherwise, when a particularly rough winter came you might not get out of your garden until spring came along.
