Haagen Dazs Ice Cream

With a name like Haagen-Dazs, you would think that your ice cream comes from Denmark. However, you would be completely wrong. The ice cream with the Danish name actually comes from New York City. It was a name that was chosen by two immigrants from Poland. Polish couple Reuben and Rose Mattus emigrated to New York in 1921. They went to work in the family’s ice cream business, selling fruit ice and ice cream pops from a horse-drawn wagon in the borough of the Bronx. Reuben and Rose decided to go their own way in the 1960s and started an ice cream company offering three flavors – vanilla, chocolate, and coffee.

It was at this time that Reuben came up with the Danish-sounding name Haagen-Dazs. So with the most unusual name for an ice cream company they even added a map of Denmark to the ice cream cartons just to give the impression that the product came from Europe. It worked that their ice cream became popular and was shipped all over the U.S by 1973. Their first ice cream scoop shop opened in Brooklyn in 1976 and in 1983 the Pillsbury company bought Haagen-Dazs and began shipping all over the world.

Today Haagen-Dazs is owned by General Mills and has become a recognized international brand. If you happen to be in New York City you can order Haagen-Dazs in the Bronx at their Grand Concourse store.
