Good Old Scrooge

Even though everyone agrees that Scrooge was a mean, old man who luckily changed his tune at Christmas, his story is read and looked at Christmas year after year. The author Charles Dickens wrote this classic story “A Christmas Carol” and it was published on December 17, 1843.

By now most everyone knows this story set in Victorian England that begins with reminding us of the death of Scrooge’s friend Jacob Marley. Afterward we see how the mean and miserly Scrooge gets the chance to change his life around when three ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve. Then along came Hollywood and now there are many different versions of this story for you to choose and enjoy.

The oldest of the Scrooge films is from 1910 a silent Thomas Edison film “A Christmas Carol”.

1938 – “A Christmas Carol” starring Reginald Owen as Ebenezer Scrooge.

1951 – “A Christmas Carol” starring Alistair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge is my all time favorite.

1984 – Another version starring George C. Scott.

1999 – Starring Patrick Stewart.

2009 – An animated version starring Jim Carrey.

There is also a musical version which I enjoy a lot. The movie is titled “Scrooge” and stars Albert Finney. It includes lots of music and song.

Finally Bill Murray got into the action in 1988 when he  came out with a completely different kind of version called “Scrooged”.

If you don’t get tired of this story you can take a look at all of the versions and choose your favorite.
