Golden Amber

Amber is considered to be a gemstone that comes from the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It has been a popular golden gemstone for centuries. A real favorite among Latvians who sometimes refer to the Baltic Sea as the “Amber Sea” since it washes amber upon its shores.

Baltic amber is made up of organic matter – petrified conifer resin. In Latvian amber is “dzintars” and Latvia has been referred to as the “Land of Amber”. A good deal of the amber in Latvia is used in making jewelry. It is most fascinating when there are inclusions of insect and plant matter.

Baltic amber was found in Egyptian tombs and burial sites in the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Germany, Poland, and the Scandinavian countries. The major amber producing countries today are Poland and Russia. Russia supplies about 70% of the world’s amber and almost all of the Baltic amber.
