"GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY."

This spectacular capture of sheet-lightning exploding across the night sky of summer dry Botswana plain, its appearance, often promising succor and more often not, to the cracked, parched lips of humans and animals alike. The image took my mind swiftly to other thoughts, thoughts of a kind of reckoning, perhaps even a bargaining chip bought in the casino of the devil to conjure up life-giving water…

These immortal words below are not mine and have been sung by legends like Burl Yves way back in 1948, Marty Robbins in the 1960’s and more recently by Johnny Cash, Willy Nelson and so many others each one bringing his own perfect version of a hauntingly beautiful and truly Prophetic piece.

I chose this version by a group called the Outlaws wherein the lead guitar, probably a Fender Stratocaster, is masterfully put through it’s remarkable scale-range, lending another dimension of soulfulness, very reminiscent of my son Werner, whom I have not seen for several years, self taught, style of playing.

Here then for your pleasure and mine, Ghost Riders In The Sky as played and sung by , the Outlaws, a few of the lyrics, “An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day, upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way.

When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw… a-plowing through the ragged sky, and up the cloudy draw. Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel… their horns were black and shiny and their breath he could feel.

A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky for he saw the riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry.

Yippie-yi Yaaay!, Yippie-yi Yoohh!”
