Friday in Black and White- the Clock Tower from Piatra Neamț

One of the most attractive cultural and historical landmarks of the Moldavian city of Piatra Neamț is represented by the clock tower which rises high and proud in the center of the city. The 20-meter high structure was built in 1499 aș the bell tower of St. John church during the reign of Stephen the Great, Moldavia’smost acclaimed ruler, and for this reason, it is also called ‘Stephen the Great’s Tower.’

The clock tower has been for a while the highest building in PiatraNeamț, and even if it no longer holds this position, its massive aspect and solidity are overwhelming for any person who sees it for the first time. It stands as a symbol of the city of Piatra Neamț and it never ceases to impress me when I see it!

  1. There is a clock tower here that is a major feature of the town. … It rings each hour twenty-four hours a day. It’s funny, there is a bed and breakfast right across the street and they wanted to silence the bell at night. The town said no. Once you are here for a few days in a row it no longer wakes you.

    • It’s great to hear that the cultural and historical value of the clock tower in your town is more important for the people than the minor inconvenience that its hourly routine might cause to some individuals.
