You might be wondering what these two things have in common. Their common factor is the U.S. One was invented in California and one received its name from Connecticut.
You might find it surprising that fortune cookies were invented in California. Two businesses stake claim to being the inventors. One is the Bekyodo Bakery in San Francisco and the other David Jung’s Hong Kong Noodle Company in Los Angeles. When it came to a ruling San Francisco got the thumbs up but you know that Los Angeles protested. Whatever the truth actually is the fortune cookie was invented in the Golden State. The fortune cookie first appeared in every Chinese restaurant in the states after WW II.
Now we come to lollipops which originally were written as “Lolly Pop”. They got their name from an inventor named George Smith in New Haven, Connecticut. The name was trademarked in 1931 so you could say the lollypop goes back a long, long way. There are some ideas that the name was thought up as an inspiration from a racehorse that was named Lolly Pop.

I love these cookies. Lollipop is still very popular with children today.
I have never tried fortune cookies, but I used to love lollipos as a child – the ones that had gum in the center.
I have never tried fortune cookies.
I have read about these in another post by Carol.
I saw these in a Thai restaurant in the US and bought a whole packet from a store for a party back home.
I actually read this while doing my US states series. Amazing right!
