For the Love of Teddy Bears

You could say that the ever-popular Teddy Bear was born on February 15, 1903. On this day Morris Michtom, who was a toy store owner and inventor put two stuffed bears in his shop window with a sign that said they were Teddy bears. Before this Michtom had petitioned the 26th President of the U.S. Theodore Roosevelt to get permission to use his nickname Teddy for the bear. Once the president agreed, Michtom created the bear and amazingly it soon became a national childhood institution. Pretty soon you could see children everywhere holding on to a Teddy bear.  Of course, even older children, teenagers, and adults grew to love the Teddy bear and who could resist Elvis when he sang his song “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear”.

  1. I did not have a teddy bear as a kid but I have one now and also many soft toys which I love to collect. This teddy bear was gifted to me by my online friend from the UK who visited us a few years ago.
