Fish Scale Clouds

Looking up at the sky is always a rewarding experience, more so if you love rains and clouds. Clouds form many interesting patterns in the sky. No two cloud formations look the same. We are treated with a new piece of art every time we look at a cloudy sky.

This picture was taken two months back from my home. This pattern of clouds is called fish scale clouds or Mackerel Sky, named so because of its resemblance to fish scales. The fish scale patterns are a sign that rains would arrive soon. It rained on the day I took this picture.

We all can do our own weather forecasting by such basic observations. Do you make your own weather forecasting?

  • Question of

Can you tell with accuracy if it would rain on a day?

    • Yes
    • No
  • Question of

How would you predict the arrival of rains?

    • Fish scale clouds
    • Sultry feeling
    • Intuition
    • Can not predict rains

  1. I didn’t know there are names for the cloud patterns. Thanks for sharing this.

I couldn’t tell whether it was going to rain at all when I was younger, but now as I always bring my children to the park, by observations and experiences, I guess my prediction becomes better.

    • I didn’t know there is app for predicting rain. There should be, as there are always apps that help me to manage our life. 🙂

I also always appreciate the rains that help us to water the plants, and make the weather becomes better too. (Recently the haze in our area was really bad, thank to the rain, the air becomes cleaner now.)
