First Butterfly of 2019

Saw my first butterfly of 2019 today in Dustin’s garden! So excited. I have been out in the hot 95 degree sun taking photos. I have so many to share with you. This first one is the fritillary butterfly. He loves the butterfly bush. The black one and the white one. I will start with the white blooms.

People who are not very familiar with butterflies frequently mistake fritillaries for their more famous cousins, the Monarchs. Most are orange and black like the monarchs, but with a different pattern and some are about the same size.

They are as attractive and their life histories are just as interesting, although they do not make the monarch’s incredible journey all the way to Mexico. Sadly, some species of fritillaries are considered endangered.

I feel honored to have these endangered beauties in my yard. In Dustin’s garden. Life is good!

  1. This may sound strange to you but on a fine winter’s day I sometimes see the odd Monarch I have never seen this butterfly but it certainly is very beautiful
