Feeding the Backyard Birds

During the fall and winter the birds are busy looking for food. The insects from the summer are all gone. I always put out suet feeders in the trees in the backyard. They seem to enjoy the protein.

I also have a homemade recipe I sometimes make using peanut butter.

Suet is a high energy formulation of animal fat and other ingredients to attract insect eating birds. Suet is a quick source of heat and energy for birds whose metabolisms are set on fast forward.

It traditionally has been used as a good substitute for the insects that birds usually feed upon but are not plentiful in cold weather. Suet can be presented all year long.

I always see woodpeckers, mockingbirds bluejays and other birds visit the suet. This also keeps them around the yard and they will return in the spring to raise their babies. Trying to keep the yard bird friendly.

  1. I love feeding birds in the pond, often going there. In winter we always leave some feed for them in our garden. it’s a spectacular view when they come to pick it.
