Favorite annual flowers in the garden – Pansies

I bought some pansies two years ago and was hooked ever since. I love their soft delicate petals and planted some from seed early this year. The results were quite satisfactory and they bring a smile to my face every  time I look at them.  These annuals grow well into fall and I brought mine indoors last fall  and they bloomed all winter.

Pansies grow well in containers and I enjoy their funny faces. They love cool weather and do great in spring and fall even though they bloom all through summer. The pansy is a hybrid of several species and is also called Viola and Violet.

The pansy gets its name from the French word pensee which means thought in English. Their origin can be traced to the European wildflower, Viola Tricolor. Pansies are edible and can be used in salads and deserts. It is also believed to have medicinal properties and has been used for respiratory and skin problems.

  1. Love pansies. It’s too hot in summer for them here, but they last fall, winter, spring, even showing color in light snowfall. I’m so looking forward to putting them out at end of September because I hope to fill every pot and border with color. They do make a salad look so pretty and are fun to put in an ice ring for a bowl of punch.

    • Yes they do love the cooler weather. I kept a pot on my back porch all winter and it survived even when the temps dropped below 0. I can imagine they make great decorations for cakes also.
