Eye Patches on Pirates

Are we to assume that every pirate with an eye patch had an eye problem? Perhaps they all somehow lost one eye. However, the loss of an eye had nothing to do with it. It has been proven in a study that when eyes go from darkness to light it can take up to 25 minutes for them to adjust to going from total darkness to brightness and the other way around.

Since pirates often had to go from above deck to below deck where there was practically no light the smart pirates wore eye patches.  So that one eye would always be adapted to darkness and when they went down below they uncovered the closed eye and covered the unclosed eye so that they could see right away in the darkness. This way they would always be ready if any unexpected trouble occurred. At least this is the theory. However, I’d like to see a drunken pirate know right away what to do and remember which of his eyes is covered. Then also one might consider that having had plenty of rum he might be seeing double so that would be an entirely different problem.

Even though no one is absolutely sure about this it is a fact that one can keep one eye always dark-adapted. Go ahead give it a try perhaps an eye-patch can make you look really exotic. Let’s keep thinking that pirates were so intelligent even though no historic proof has been found. If you are curious enough perhaps you can call back the spirit of a pirate and ask him for confirmation. Yo, ho, ho and have a bottle of rum with him.
