One of the interesting things about the newest phones is that they fit into devices built for the previous phones. That hasn’t always been the case. Form factor and plugs have both changed in the past five years. Now, for those that stay current on the OS of the phone, upgrades are the one thing that Apple has done better than anyone, until recently. The old PPC phones were a wipe and replaced. It was painful when you had to upgrade your phone. iPhones came along with the concept of easier upgrades. One of the things I find that drives consumer purchasing is the reality of the easy button. Staples shared the commercials for a long time their easy button commercial.
Press the easy button and you are done.
Apple made iPhone upgrades like that, press and went! Both Android and Microsoft have moved from their old models to the apple upgrade model. Now it is almost expected that upgrades occur easily. I sometimes wonder if that is, in fact, the optimal learning model. If there are issues, do you know how to resolve them? I know for example that I can create a window 10 USB boot key and copy all my files from my documents folder to another location if for some reasons I have to completely reinstall my PC. I have a time machine backup of my home mac; I can do the same things with the mac if I need to save files before blowing the mac away.
I can’t do that with my tablet or my phone. It makes me wonder if that is the optimal situation going forward. It forces me to make sure my iTunes backup is functional and working. I do check my backups frequently. Over time I’ve learned to validate backups when I cannot guarantee I can boot the device and save my files separately. I will end this post with a question for the community. Would there be value in my spending some column time talking about what and how to backup files on your Mac, PC, cell phone and tablet? I will put some shaping questions after the post; please let me know if there would be value in my doing that. Feel free to comment on this topic as well.

I usually assume that my gmail account has backup of all data. But who knows?
It should have most of your data, but it never hurts to check!
I have not made a backup yet, although I lost all the data in my laptop once.
There are free drives available you can use (Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon) all offer a free online drive. at least you can backup your critical files!
I use ghost to snapshot the root partition on my computers. But that only works when you are restoring to the same system. When you’re changing architecture, you need a fresh install…
Your primary system is also air-gapped, and you are significantly more technical than most folks are!
I was pretty technical before I got the job at Symantec, after that I was forced to get way more so just to fit in…
I suspect I was technical long before I was in IT as well. Then all of a sudden I was talking to customers about things that were going to happen, long before they did. I was hooked!
I’ve found that just by hanging out with tech junkies, you get more technical by proximity. It just rubs off on you…
Well, then I should be the most technical person on earth. The problem for me is there are many techies much smarter than I am. I am in constant learning mode most days.
When you’re the smartest, it is hard to learn more. When you aren’t, the solutions is simple; just hang out with a smart crowd and listen…
And listen, the most critical two words in the universe!
you still have to comprehend what is being said, but listening gets you down that road
true, but comprehend only works with listening!
absolutely true but if you don’t understand what was said, does it matter if you listen or not?
Now you are getting to the essence of human kindness. Yes, even if you don’t understand you have to listen.
you’re talking manners here…
Manners yes, are a part of human kindness. But i prefer to think it is more an extension of remembering the human.
I don’t want to listen to all humans, just the ones with something to say
Now that is the reality of the modern world in a nutshell.
For me, I listen to all who talk to me. I refuse to listen to those that talk at me. Its why I don’t read two specific writers here on Virily. They talk at you.
if I wanted to be condescended to, I’d watch fox news
My dad always taught me to know both sides. At times I listen to fox news to understand. There is no middle ground if you can’t point to the features of the highlands and the lowlands!
it is important to know where the other side is coming from
it is, it can be frustrating at times but it is important to try.
if you don’t understand your opposition, you can get blindsided
i am thankful to Google photos, because it automatically keeps the photos. When I lost my phone I didn’t lose my pictures.
That is a very good thing – what about applications did you have to reinstall them?
idon’t have special applications. so it’s fine.
I understand that. I have several that I use every day, but they are backed up in the cloud!
i am not really that into phone and laptop thing, as long as i am using functional ones i am ok
When my iphone died, the files died away with it. Same way with my Nexus tablet which I used to bring when I am travelling because I have lots of ebooks there. But yes, I lost the books, the photos, the music. ???
sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing! I am slowly building a picture.
