Detective Jigsaw John

Known as one of the most tenacious and prolific officers in American history John P. St. John was given the nickname Jigsaw John. He served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 51 years which included 43 years as a homicide detective. During his career, he was able to solve more than 1,000 murders. He earned his nickname because other officers thought he was very clever when it came to putting clues together like in a puzzle.

Jigsaw John worked on one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in America’s history. It was the murder of Elizabeth Short known as the “Black Dahlia”. This was the first of the infamous murders that St. John took on. He also investigated such serial killers as the “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez, the Hillside Stranglers, and the Grim Sleeper. He became the only second recipient of the Police Department’s Distinguished Service Medal for his eight-year investigation and finally captured William Bonin who was one of the Freeway Killers.

Many of these cases mentioned have been made into movies or have documentaries of them.
