Dad Sure Loved the Sun

With the weather becoming warmer and the sun shining brighter I am reminded of my dad. In the summer which we spent out in the Catskill Mountains, he found the hottest place to sunbathe. My dad Eriks and his friend Nikolajs, who was also a writer and poet, would go into the woods and there was a clearing upon which the summer sun blazed. It was so hot there that it felt more like a sauna. I couldn’t spend much time there. This was the place for two old friends from Latvia to talk about the good old days and their buddies while getting good and brown.

At first, I couldn’t understand why my dad loved sunbathing in such heat. Then I remembered that he was from the country. He was born in a small place in Latvia called Ranka in the Vidzeme region. In the summertime, he would work out in the fields even if the sun was very hot. That is one version that he got used to it. The other is that actually the summers in Latvia are pretty cool so perhaps it was a way to get himself really warmed up. Either way every summer my dad had a very dark tan.

As the years have gone on I have stopped sunbathing. I just cannot handle too much heat but I still love hot summers. So if I am going to spend a lot of time outdoors I prefer to spend it in shady spots.
