Yesterday I did my what has become nearly monthly Cybersecurity post. I want to make sure everyone on and using Virily is remembering that Security starts with you! To expand that a bit, I did want to talk today about some of the many scams that are out there. This time, though, if you get the scam call some things, you can do to delay someone else getting that call.
I like to keep the scammer on the line for as long as I can. I figure every minute they waste chasing me is a mixture of two minutes they can’t hurt or get someone else. So I keep them on the line. What follows is a few of my favorite things to say.
Hi, I am from the windows helpdesk. The voice says. “your computer is showing a lot of errors.”
“That is wonderful, and I am glad you called. My goodness that os [erfect timing. Thank you for calling. So what can I do about the errors?’
“Sir, if you will let me take control of your computer, I can show you.”
“That would be great, can you wait for about five minutes?”
“why five minutes, sir?”
“The fire department just gave it to me and it is still burning a little from the fire.”
Click. Every time. They hang up!
My next favorite scam is the Nigerian prince or some other way someone is going to leave me millions of dollars. My grandfather always said if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! I never reply to those emails because they often collect valid emails and sell those to Spam email groups.
Security starts with you! If it sounds too good to be tur it is most likely.

I love that “fireman” response. Haha.
However, here in the Philippines, they are more on SMS scams rather than call scams.
On one occasion in our internet cafe, I noticed that a family was responding to what I thought was a Nigerian scam email. I wanted to verify and inform them of the scam, but they were very ‘secretive’ and said it was nothing.
it is a tough situation sometimes. I find the amazing number of these scams out there to be daunting.

whaddaya mean the Nigerian prince is a scam? he sounds legit to me…
Hush! His whereabouts are supposed to be a secret!
However, he got caught several times here in the Philippines. What’s amazing is, his face is different each time.
Hehe
the power of reconstructive surgery!!!
he is real for some people Alex.
so are santa and the tooth fairy. but that doesn’t make it so…
🙂 the tooth fairy I would tend to agree with. But santa? people that are grouchy year round smile this time of year….
correlation does not imply causation
except on Friday mornings. Then it is a one to one relationship 🙂
that’s because statistics only works a half day on Fridays
Poor statisticians, no matter what they are made fun of.
that’s because the layman doesn’t understand the value of stats, and resent them
they don’t call econ the dismal science for nuthin…
i always find economics to be an interesting thing to consider. The math of the economy interests me.
what drives change? the value on the other side!
what drives stagnation? the status quo
that is an interesting question – and I do agree with you that stagnation is often driven by the status quo. But there are other things that cause it as well…
it isn’t the only cause, but seems to be the prime mover lately…
i think we could say stagnation is a driver in some areas of society. Other areas are moving forward at a rapid rate.
I wonder sometimes if we, on the edge of the cusp of the information age, are actually in the age of bifurcation.
without education, stagnation is pretty much a given. and this nation has pretty much turned its back on education
i hear my fathers voice “be a life long learner”
i suspect we are struggling now as a nation with the concept of change.
we should be begging for change
No body has called me from the Windows so far to take control of my computer but rest of the tricks are common. However, if the scammers are increasing that shows that they can find innocent or newbies that become easy prey for them.
I think one of the reasons they have to increase, is that the rejection rate is higher than in the past. They have to make many more calls now.
I call it scam/spam mail and I am glad that my email sites put all the dumb emails in my spam folders so that I can just delete them. Lately, I don’t know why but I keep getting emails that say your check of so and so dollars is ready just claim it. I just delete them but I wonder why they don’t drop into my spam folder.
Ah, so you are heading into the realm of my post of today! 🙂 The good news is there is an answer in there to your question of today!
This remind me of the speach of some guy who decided to answer a spam email to see what will happen. I am not sure whether it’s just a joke, or an actual experiment, but it was quite fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QdPW8JrYzQ
there are a lot of people now who do the string the email sender or phone caller along! It is funny how nasty they get when you keep them on the line!!!
Yeah, I also saw this girl who is a voice actor and she was pranking them really well.
yes I love that type of stuff!!!
Here in Bulgaria, scammers use the landline phones, which mostly elder people have, and many of them fall for it. Both my grandparents were almost victims of that, luckily the problems got resolved before it got too bad. The worst part is that people talk about it all the time, and people still don’t learn to be suspicious.
Also, scamming and virus emails from ridicolous domains flood us all the time, pretending to be send from banks, or institutions, and they still succeed.
it is a really bad thing overall. i really hate that they pick on group of people that may not be as tech savvy!
I’ve also received quite a few emails from scammers. I ignore all this.
sometimes i read them and laugh, it is sad though.
They can be very comical. Most times I immediately delete them.
well looking at my spam this morning –
i can cut my mortgage rate
I can help a person get money into the country
🙂
There are news stories every day it seems about those falling to these scams.
i try really hard (as I am sure you remember) to get these out every quarter or more often if I can!
Yes and so many are just not paying attention perhaps.
sometimes it is someone that is just good-hearted trying to help. Those are the ones that make me frustrated.
Thanks for the very important info, dear friend …. I’m not communicating with any stranger anywhere
Thanks – I want to make sure everyone is safe online!
You are really kind and thank you for your efforts
you are also very kind. I am just trying to do the right things!
I read somewhere, the reasons why many people are robbed of their money through scams is because they are greedy. I have to agree. We like fast money.
I also like playing with them. I have never received a call but through email I play along as a fool or just ignore them. Even here on Virily, I did receive a message which I knew right away was a scam.
i have gotten a couple on Virily as well. In many cases it is greed. In some cases it is someone praying on the good heart of another.
I once had a scammer contact me on Facebook. Be careful there too. The man wanted all my information because he said that the IRS was going to send me $100,000. I asked for proof and his co-worker sent me a picture of US money. I think that it was play money. There is no way that the IRS will send cash to people.
that is very true! the IRS never sends cash.
They also don’t call. They send registered mail!
The mail that I get from them is sent to my mailbox, which doesn’t lock. . .
you have to personally sign for a registered letter.
and according to my Junk email , I have the UK lottery worth 50000000000 UK Pound
congrats on your huge victory!!! I love those emails!!!!
This is nice. Thanks for this information.
you are quite welcome thanks for the kind words!
