Cybersecurity, beware of those who don't mean well!

Yesterday I did my what has become nearly monthly Cybersecurity post. I want to make sure everyone on and using Virily is remembering that Security starts with you! To expand that a bit, I did want to talk today about some of the many scams that are out there. This time, though, if you get the scam call some things, you can do to delay someone else getting that call.

I like to keep the scammer on the line for as long as I can. I figure every minute they waste chasing me is a mixture of two minutes they can’t hurt or get someone else. So I keep them on the line. What follows is a few of my favorite things to say.

Hi, I am from the windows helpdesk. The voice says. “your computer is showing a lot of errors.”

“That is wonderful, and I am glad you called. My goodness that os [erfect timing. Thank you for calling. So what can I do about the errors?’

“Sir, if you will let me take control of your computer, I can show you.”

“That would be great, can you wait for about five minutes?”

“why five minutes, sir?”

“The fire department just gave it to me and it is still burning a little from the fire.”

Click. Every time. They hang up!

My next favorite scam is the Nigerian prince or some other way someone is going to leave me millions of dollars. My grandfather always said if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! I never reply to those emails because they often collect valid emails and sell those to Spam email groups.

Security starts with you! If it sounds too good to be tur it is most likely.

  1. I love that “fireman” response. Haha.
However, here in the Philippines, they are more on SMS scams rather than call scams.

On one occasion in our internet cafe, I noticed that a family was responding to what I thought was a Nigerian scam email. I wanted to verify and inform them of the scam, but they were very ‘secretive’ and said it was nothing.

  3. No body has called me from the Windows so far to take control of my computer but rest of the tricks are common. However, if the scammers are increasing that shows that they can find innocent or newbies that become easy prey for them.

  4. I call it scam/spam mail and I am glad that my email sites put all the dumb emails in my spam folders so that I can just delete them. Lately, I don’t know why but I keep getting emails that say your check of so and so dollars is ready just claim it. I just delete them but I wonder why they don’t drop into my spam folder.

  5. I read somewhere, the reasons why many people are robbed of their money through scams is because they are greedy. I have to agree. We like fast money.
I also like playing with them. I have never received a call but through email I play along as a fool or just ignore them. Even here on Virily, I did receive a message which I knew right away was a scam.

  6. I once had a scammer contact me on Facebook. Be careful there too. The man wanted all my information because he said that the IRS was going to send me $100,000. I asked for proof and his co-worker sent me a picture of US money. I think that it was play money. There is no way that the IRS will send cash to people.
