Continuing on the quest to replace Google +

I know that I don’t always use Social Media the way other folks do. Based on that I’ve been collecting data both on how other users are using Social Media but also which Social Site is being used the most. I’ve posted the question/concept here on Virily and MyLot. Overall the consensus of the majority of responders and messages sent directly to me is Twitter is the leader for sharing blog posts and other information. Facebook is second, and Google + is the third option. I was hoping that Google + was lower on the list because it would be easier to replace for writers. But it isn’t so we come back to how do you use the various social sites. Based on that I am going to share how I use Social media and how I track my impact.

  1. I share most Virily posts to Twitter. I check on the Twitter dashboard, (ok once a week or so) to see which posts I shared got the most views.  I do post other things to twitter, but for the most part, it is either retweeting something interesting or sharing a Virily or other blog post.
  2. I share some things on Facebook, but for the most part, I use Facebook to keep up with family
  3. The Pinterest, interesting issue here, I use Pinterest as my Virily backup (I share all my posts there, so I have a copy in case of problems on Virily)
  4. I use Patron – it is a great site for sharing the post
  5. I use mix, although I am newer on Mix I use it for adding information
  6. I used to use Flipboard, but I do not anymore
  7. I use Reddit for sharing my Virily posts, normally one to two days after
  8. I use Bloggers inspiring Bloggers on Facebook to share posts
  9. I use Sharing our Creativity on Facebook to share posts

Much like the other folks that responded, most people get more traffic on Twitter than the other sites. A couple of folks have said they do get better responses on some types of posts (most picture focused posts) using Facebook. One of the things I would love to be able to see if the reality of influencers and do they pull in more external readers than other Virily readers. There are a couple of the influencers that bring a lot of other Virily readers with them. But beyond that “anecdotal” evidence I don’t have any way to collect that data. I do know (I only shared a number of my posts (10) to Facebook and did the same sharing to Twitter. I averaged many more views sharing to Twitter than I did share to Facebook.

  2. I use Twitter for sharing blog posts, and have done so for several years. I now have more than 68.5K followers on Twitter and I use Socialoomph to program my Twitter feeds right round the clock.

  3. I use Facebook groups but I use different ones for different posts. I belong to quite a few of them. If my post has to do with trains, I share them on the train-related groups.

My biggest success has been my articles about Chicago. There are several Chicago-related groups and they tend to have large memberships.

    • Thanks, Gary, Facebook is definitely an interesting media endpoint. I find its impact (for me) goes up and down depending on the time of year and as you point out, the group I post in.

  4. I think Twitter is currently best known. There are many social networks in your posts that I have not heard before. I do not know how well we know them in our countries (Europe)
