Nothing says spring like tulips in full bloom. While most tulips are red, yellow, pink or white, I was thrilled to find these Indigo and white tulips at our local conservatory.
It is believed that tulips were cultivated in Asia from as early as the tenth century. By the 16th century, tulips had been discovered by the West and quickly became a much prized and traded commodity in Europe. The variegated type tulips is the result of an infection by something called the tulip breaking virus which developed during the heyday of the tulip in the 17th century in the Netherlands. This virus is responsible for the beautiful variegated patterns of tulips similar to the one in the photo here.
