The reality of climate change is huge. The reality is that each of us contained inside our worlds, is small. Yesterday I talked about the reality of Transactive Energy. One of the things TE does honestly allows for more localized production of power. The further you transport energy, the greater the loss of energy is. Within the concept of TE there are two things, laws that support the concept of production and redistribution of energy. What that means is that the power company produces energy and charges for it. With TE, when your solar or wind turbine produces more energy than you need it is moved to the power grid, and the power company pays you for that energy. The second part is the creation of what is called a Micro-Grid. The power grid represents power generators, delivery systems, and consumer systems. Micro-Grids put the production, consumption, and later redistricting if there is extra energy, into a single place. Put a solar array on your roof, and you are a Micro-Grid. Put a wind turbine on your roof, and you are a Micro-Grid.
That is the big answer to what can I do. There are, however, lots of smaller things you can do. There are also little things. The little things allow each of us to contribute to helping with climate change. I am going to list some below, please (the list is not complete on purpose), add more!
- See the article link below – whales are a HUGE impact on the environment. The average whale consumes and stores more than 33 tons of Carbon Dioxide during its lifetime. When they die, they sink to the bottom of the ocean, and that CO2 is consumed by bottom-dwelling creatures and no released back into the environment. Save the Whales – Greenpeace was right all along!
- I have to be honest, and this one hurts to say. In the summer increase the Temp you set your AC at 78 degrees.
- Same in the winter, set the temperature of your furnace to 68 degrees. (those two hurt because my father was talking about that being something to do more than 30 years ago)
- Turn off the lights (except when reading posts by Alex Levante, then leave the lights on)when you are not using them.
- Take public transportation when it is available (I always ride the Metro to downtown DC, less traffic, no parking issues, and overall less pollution!)
- Buy things that are packaged in paper, not plastic
Please, this list is hardly even a good start! Add more in the comments!
The reality is this is a huge issue. It is not one that can be throw out simply because we don’t like the end game. We can each make a small contribution to making our world a little better before it is too late. Climate change is a huge issue. I know many people that are truly emotionally drained from giving against the so-called deniers. But I will leave you with something positive.
We can change the world. We have done it already. We can do it again!
Do go gentle into that good night; make sure the lights in the room you left are off!
Save the whales, save the planet

Good tips, I do some of these and I am always trying to go in the right direction.
I agree!!!! It is so hard sometimes. Do the right thing was my grandfathers rule!
I keep telling my boys to switch off the lights when they leave the place. we try to keep our ac on only when the heat gets too oppressive. We make do with fans and netted windows.
that is a really good way to operate! The more we all do the better the world will become!

Curious why 1 person feels like public buildings should not be required to have solar power. Since the power for that building comes directly out of the nations, cities or regional budget.
Consume less. Need less. ?
live simple is a great motto, and a good way to move through life!!!
Just a whim. But if you run out of poll topics, run a poll asking people what is their exact idea of simple life ?. How simple is simple life to each person ?
I would love to see a no-plastic option for things I buy!
So, you will have to carry refillable bottles when you buy shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, and such?
actually there are non plastic containers that could be used.
There are hundreds of things that can be used. But until the governments all over the world put down their feet and say stop, nothing huge will happen. Fact is, the whole world is controlled by the very few wealthy people and they own those big companies that use plastic packaging and they also own the governments ?
Can I stand in the middle of that statement? I no longer believe that people cannot change the world. The reality of the media is that open questions get asked over and over.
Hong Kong is terrible, but it is forcing China’s hand. Arab Spring was horrible but it forced three governments out.
I want the media to start decrying climate change more!
Either side has people though ? and the pendulum swings to where there is a group of people funded with money ?.
Hong Kong? To outsiders, it looks like the protesters are forcing China. There are parties waiting for China to turn it into Tiananmen Square. However, the reality is that the protesters are affecting the lives of their own countrymen. And that is sad. Sorry, I do not believe in violence as a way out. Violence always disposed one evil only to put in throne another. Oh, I’d just been to HK.
It actually has forced China’s hands considerably. Tinnamin square was them reacting very quickly. They have sat on the hands in HK for 20 days. That is a fear change – media impacts even China.
Much of the protest wasn’t violent at first.
I like the lights off anyway, and try to adapt to my environment instead of the other way around so other than the computer, not much energy usage
now you are painting a picture for me of the artist’s cave!
That is truly a good way to move along the electric consumption path!
uncertain if I deserve praise for this, as I would be doing it regardless…
I was looking at the energy report for my house (comes from a Kickstarter project I backed).
interesting but heating and cooling were not as high on the list as I thought they would be. In the summer cooling is the top consumer, but over the 12 months of a year, cooling is actually number 3.
the fact that we can do this so effortlessly fills me with hope for the future. and then I remember the present…
If I can track it, I can change it! If I can measure it I can change it!
you could always change it, but now you can do so from an informed position and your changes can have an optimal chance at success
well if you are going to start applying logic to situations I am out 🙂
yes, you are right!
why guess when you can generate metrics?
I love it when i have disagreements here with other authors and they return suppositions rather than links and facts.
I always put the words to Prove it in my reply.
fact vs supposition either means you don’t understand the issue, or you think your opinion is perfect!
are you familiar with Hitchen’s Razor?
i worked for a boss in IT who applied Hitchen’s Razor to problem-solving. If you bring up a problem, you own the solution.
Made our team meetings move along quickly!
I totally agree with the facts in your post. We can do a lot with these little things. We have a proverb: stone to stone palace. I only have the light on in the room I am in. I have no appliance on standby. When buying a new appliance, I make sure that it consumes as little energy as possible.
🙂 yes, we can do many little things. The appliance issue was something I was going to cover later. The concept is of a power vampire. Appliances that consume power even when they are off.
I will gladly read this and so prove to my hometowns that this is true. They do not believe that the device burns energy when in standby mode. ?
i have heard that argument before – I just point at the LED that is lit!
We turn out the lights whenever we can to save money and love the photo Doc.
Thanks! good for you doing that. every little bit helps!
What about that beautiful azalea or rhododendron perhaps in the photo, wow!
I keep my thermostat low in the winter and high in the summer. All lights are off when I leave the room. The television is only on at night, which uses a ton of electricity by the way.
Good reminders again for everyone.
thanks Carol, you are well ahead! If everyone did the little things we would be well begun!
Nice and perfectly written, dear friend …. but I really didn’t know about the whales …. I don’t know what your temperatures are … I have about 25 degrees in the house and my partner keeps guaranteeing that she’s cold …. which is in my power make for a more friendly environment
Thanks for the thought dear friend. You are doing well, my wife always says the house is too cool, so we run the woodstove most of the winter!
If the house is cold it really is not pleasant, dear friend
use quilts, wear sweaters. Humans were not designed to always be comfortable!
But this should convince my lady …. she in my sweater and I in a T-shirt because I’m hot but it’s always cold
i lose the same argument at home as well.
we are small but we can make huge things for the environment.
it is all about the little things we do every single day!
